First, check your disk for errors with Scan Disk. You can run this utility by clicking on the Start button and first selecting Programs, then Accessories, then System Tools, then Scan Disk.
After scanning, go back to the Start menu and select Programs, Accessories, System Tools, and Disk De fragmenter to defrag.
Windows 3.x
Exit to DOS. First, check your drive for errors by typing SCANDISK at the C: prompt and hitting ENTER. When Scan Disk finishes, exit the program. At the C: prompt, type DEFRAG C: where "C" is the letter of your hard drive, and hit ENTER.
Macintosh
Since the Mac OS has no built-in disk- scanning or de fragmentation utility, you'll need third-party programs like Disk Doctor and Speed Disk, which are part of Symantec's Norton Utilities. Many new Macs and OS upgrades now come with it, so look around you may already have it.
